Welcome to Fort York, the historic birthplace of modern Toronto. Built in 1793, this fortress was created to protect the early settlement from enemy attacks. Today, it stands as Canada’s largest collection of original buildings from the War of 1812, offering your family a real-world look back in time.

As you explore the grounds, keep an eye out for the massive green earthen walls, called ramparts. These structures were designed to absorb the impact of incoming enemy cannonballs. Kids will love walking up the grassy slopes to look out over the grounds, just like the sentries did over two hundred years ago.

Inside the fort, make sure to visit the low brick barracks where the regular soldiers lived. You can step into the actual rooms where dozens of men slept side-by-side in cramped wooden bunks. Right nearby, contrast this tough lifestyle by visiting the much more comfortable Officers’ Quarters, where the army leaders enjoyed private rooms, fine furniture, and personal space.

Finally, do not miss the Brick Powder Magazine, which is the oldest surviving stone building in Toronto. Its walls are incredibly thick to safeguard the fort's gunpowder from sparks and explosions. Before you leave the open central square, stand next to the giant iron cannons and imagine the noise and teamwork it took to fire them.
